Abstract: The important role of cutting tool and tool material in the human’s history is expounded . The tool materials used in the early stage are looked back. The chemical contends, manufacturing methods, cutting performances and application area of morden tool materials (high speed steel, cemented carbide, ceramics, superhard materials)are expounded. The development trend of new tool materials in the coming century also be calculated and prospected.
