Abstract: A wire stripper is a hand-held device used to strip the electrical insulation electric wires. The existing wire strippers are complicated, costly and easy to wear. Considering that wire strippers change their degrees-of-freedom during their motion, a new stripper design based on a compliant 5-bar mechanism utilizing metamorphic transformation is presented for wire stripping. The pseudo-rigid-body method (RPBM) is applied to solve the kinetostatic behaviors of the mechanism in different working phases. The objective function is established for optimizing the design and an optimal design is obtained using a particle swarm optimizer (PSO). Finally, based on the optimization results, a prototype is fabricated, which shows good performances in wire stripping. This compliant wire stripper is low cost, portable, simple in structure and reliable.
