Abstract: The periodic changing and moving heat source model is structured. Moreover, a new theoretical formula for calculating intermittent grinding temperature field is obtained by use of the faltung integral concept. The recommended formula has genaral significance. It is suitable for both intermittent and conventional continuous grinding. It is noteworthy that by use of this new formula not only the final temperature distribution of workpiece surface layer but also the whole time-course of the temperature distribution during grinding can be found. With the new formula the temperature distribution characteristic of workpiece surface during intermittent grinding, the effect of intermittent ratio and period on temperature distribution and the reducing temperature effect of segmental or slotted wheel have been investigated in depth. Finally, through experiment it has been confirmed that the new formula accords with the practice of intermittent grinding. This creative work can be considered as an important contribution to the basic knowledge of intermittent grinding process.
