Abstract: To investigate the formation and evolution mechanisms of surface roughness during steel/aluminum thin strip clad rolling,SUS304 stainless steel and 5052 aluminum alloy thin strips were utilized. Specimens with varying reduction rates were prepared through a designed experimental scheme for steel/aluminum clad rolling. Based on 3D profilometer measurements of surface roughness and rolling-direction line roughness on both steel and aluminum sides of the clad strips, the variation patterns of surface roughness in steel and aluminum strips with increasing reduction rates were systematically analyzed. The formation mechanisms of surface morphology on both sides of the clad strips were revealed under the effects of initial, intermediate, and final rolling passes,as well as the exit semi-rolling zone. Through experimental observations and analysis of 3D surface topography at different reduction rates, the proposed mechanisms governing surface roughness formation and evolution in steel/aluminum clad strips were validated. This study provides experimental and theoretical foundations for optimizing rolling processes of steel/aluminum clad thin strips, offering critical insights for improving the surface quality of composite strips.
