Abstract: A new CNC machine tool architecture is presented, where conventional encapsulated CNC systems are broken into two parts, motion control and process control. These two parts are both PC-based and become very independent. Hardware independent property of process control is therefore achieved with ease and the software for motion control becomes modular and simple. Basic software modulars for motion control are given. A rose-curve milling machining is used to show the procedure of a hardware independent reconfiguration of 3-axis CNC milling machines. This now architecture will support the development of various CNC machines, such as CNC milling and turning machine tools, and will support other digital control n such as cutting machines, robots, foundry and forming.
