Abstract: Equipment usually operates under severe environment and complex stress. Therefore, early detection of damage initiation and structural integrity assessment are critically important for structure safety. The external force can be converted into optical response using mechanoresponsive luminogens(MRLs), which has the advantage of non-contract, simple acquisition and transmission, visualization, etc. Recently, mechanical deformation and structural damage are transformed into visible luminescent signal or color alternation using MRLs-based sensing film, and the structural damage can be evaluated based on the luminescent signal or color alternation, providing a new idea for visual detection and assessment of structural damage. A brief overview of luminescence mechanism and performance of the typical MRLs is introduced. Moreover, preliminary applications of MRLs-based detection method for stress/strain sensing, crack evolution, inner defect as well as impact and vibration damage are summarized. Finally, the current challenges and the prospects of future trends for applications of MRLs-based detection method in industries are proposed.
