Abstract: In order to reveal the effect of the gear transmission system on the locomotive dynamics performance, the multi-body dynamics method is used to establish a completely coupled dynamic model of a heavy-haul locomotive in which the gear transmission system is considered. With this dynamics model, the dynamic response performance of the heavy-haul locomotive is investigated under the excitations from the time-varying mesh stiffness and the rail geometric irregularity. Then, influence of the gear transmission system on the dynamic performance of the heavy-haul locomotive is revealed through comparisons with the results from the traditional multi-body dynamics model of the heavy-haul locomotives without gear transmission system. At last, the established coupled dynamics model and the simulation results are validated by the experimentally tested data. The investigated results indicate that:gear transmission system has certain effect on the dynamic responses of the heavy-haul locomotive; the variation trend of the wheel-rail vertical force is basically the same for the two dynamics models, however, the amplitude of the wheel-rail vertical force calculated by the heavy-haul locomotive dynamics model with gear transmissions increases by about 5 kN under the calculation conditions; variations of the wheel-rail lateral forces appear obvious discrepancies between the two dynamics models, and the increase of the amplitude is about 6 kN for the heavy-haul locomotive dynamics model with gear transmissions under the calculation conditions.
