Abstract: A generating method with tilted double-sided cutter is proposed on the modification control question of whole tooth surface of cylindrical gears with arcuate tooth trace. According to the new generation, through adjusting the swing radius of the straight-edge cutter in generating movement, the modification control in the tooth profile direction is achieved; through adjusting the cutter-tilt, the modification control in tooth trace direction is realized. Based on the spatial kinematic principle, the kinematic transformation from traditional machine tools with tilted angle to general multi-axis computer numerical control (CNC) ones are realized by vector revolution. In the transforming process, relative position and relative motion of the workpiece and cutter in both machines are invariable, the controlling equations of generating movement of the gear is established. Thereby the cylindrical gears with symmetric arcuate tooth trace can be machined by the general multi-axis CNC milling machine. Then through the cutting experiments of the work piece and tooth contact checkout, correctness of the machining methods and the motion equations are proved. Through comparing this method with traditional machining method, it has high efficiency, simple motion relation and easily to extend application.
