Abstract: Energy consumption of machine tools is studied widely, and the modeling of the energy consumption system is one of the hot issues. In view of the difficulties to apply the existing energy models, including typical power equations and power transmission models, to describe the energy consumption state of the machine tools’ service process (MTSP) which is usually featured with multi-periods and multi-transmission chains in practice, the energy model of electro-mechanical main driving system (EMDS) for MTSP is researched. The period characteristics of input energy of MTSP are analyzed, and the different energy transmission chains and multi-transmission chains features are studied. One power equation of EMDS for multi-transmission chains of machine tools is proposed. Based on the analysis, the fundamental period energy model of EMDS during the MTSP is established. In order to make the model adapt to the practical production situation, the data collection and analysis of energy consumption of starting periods and idle periods are simplified by sectional table functions and data fitting functions, so the practical energy model of EMDS during the MTSP can be obtained finally. The case shows that the proposed model can provide supports for the energy efficiency research and assessment, energy quota determination, cutting parameters optimization for energy saving and other problems of the MTSP.
