Abstract: Continuously variable crown mill is the main mill type for wide and super wide strip production, and cubic CVC roll contour is widely applied, which can continuously adjust the quadratic crown of roll gap effectively, but can’t control the high-order wave defect, and especially has the insufficient quadratic crown control capability to narrow strip steel. Quintic CVC roll contour has high-order crown control ability, but hasn’t been put into production successfully, due to the lack of systematic and further research. After analysis of the relation between quintic CVC roll contour parameters and roll gap crowns, a design method of quintic CVC roll contour is proposed, and the crown control characteristics are analyzed. It is showed that rational design of quintic CVC roll contour can equalize the quadratic crown control capability of wide and thin strips, and its quartic crown control characteristic match the demand of strip profile control for wide strip mill, especially super wide strip mill. Then the analysis of the relationship between quintic CVC roll contour and other variable crown work roll contours is conducted, which shows that quintic CVC roll contour can substitute for the other developed variable crown roll contours almost, so the quintic CVC roll contour has better value for popularization.
