Abstract: The structure and dimensional helix characteristics of wire rope are analyzed on the basis of the differential geometry theory. The process, including several kinds of normal wire ropes with metal cores, is compiled with ANSYS software and the 6×19IWS right-hand lang-lay and right-hand regular-lay wire rope models are established. The finite element model of ropes can be acquired by appropriate meshing operation. The boundary conditions are set through restricting the degree of freedom in three directions at one end of wire rope and loading the mass force at the other end. Calculation results show that stress distribution is symmetry on the section and helix distribution on the face along length direction. It is found that the twist mode affects stress distribution. The 6×19IWS wire rope experiment under four different loading forces is carried out and the test results prove the effectiveness of the numerical simulation results.
