NEW LABORATORY METHOD FOR TESTING FRICTIONAL AND WEARING PROPERTIES OF BEARING ALLOYS

Abstract: For the purpose of studying and developing new bearing alloys, a new laboratory method is developed for testing the frictional and wearing properties of bearing alloys. In this method, two special devices are used in the conical specimen machine and the “grip” friction apparatus—to examine comparatively the running in properties, seizure resist nee and other properties of bearing alloys of different chemical compositions.The working principle of the conical specimen machine consists briefly in the following: The conical point of the bearing alloy specimen makes well lubricated sliding contact with the cylindrical surface of a rotating steel roller under constant load. Owing to the wear of the conical point of the bearing alloy specimen, area of contact gradually increases and the average contact pressure decreases. Finally lubricating oil film is formed between the rubbing surfaces and wear stops. During the test, it is possible to observe and measure continuously the rate of wear and electric contact resistance and obtain results rotating to the comparative running in properties of different alloys. The working principle of the “grip” friction test is as follows.A cylindrical steel rod is gripped crosswise between two parallel cylinders of bearing alloys. Under high contact pressure and low sliding speed, the frictional and anti-seizure properties of bearing alloy under conditions of plastic deformation are studied. Three examples of using the above mentioned method for the study of bearing alloy are reported. The results obtained prove that this method has good distinguishing ablility and reproducibility.
