Abstract: The effect of surface roughness on the static electricity is analyzed through solving the verified Reynolds equation. Pressure flow factor and shear flow factor are included in the verified Reynolds equation. The effects of the nondimensional film thickness, Hs0, the surface characteristics,g, the inverse Knudsen number, D0, and the bearing number, ∧, on the load carrying capacity are discussed. And the changing of pressure center is also investigated. As expected, the load carrying capacity for various roughness approach the smooth load as the ratio, Hs0, becomes greater and greater, and thus the roughness effect is getting smaller and smaller. With the increasing of ∧ and D0 , the roughness effect on the load decreases. Pressure center changes litter while the surface roughness was influenced. The results show that the roughness effect can not be ignored for the designing of the high-density recording disk.
