Abstract: A series of controlled friction stir welds are manuf- actured successfully using 2.5 mm thick AZ31 magnesium rolled sheet material. The results show that the top surfaces of friction stirred welds are smooth and no crack and the bottom surfaces are full penetration. Results from metallurgical, micr-o-hardness, tensile and bend measurements clearly show that the friction stir welding process can create a segregated banded microstructure and high quality joints.(The ultimate tensile stren-gth canreach to 90% of base metal) The weld nugget is consisted of fine, equaixed grain.
