Abstract: The optimization of cutting conditions to increase the economic performance of a machining operation is becoming increasingly important in modern computer aided manufacturing (CAM). Optimization strategies and CAM software for the selection of economic cutting conditions in single pass end-milling operations on CNC machine tools are discussed. The optimization model is developed using a deterministic approach involving mathematical analysis and graphical representation and based on the maximum production rate criterion. The re-sulting optimization strategies apply equally for the criterion of minimum cost per component. Numerical studies show that the optimization strategies not only ensure the global optimum solution, but also require short computer processing time to performing the CAM software, making them suitable for on-line CAM applications. Experiments have demonstrated the economic benefits of using these strategies over handbook recommendations as well as in assessing, selecting and improving machine tool design specifications.
