Abstract: In the process of gear meshing, the time-varying friction characteristics have an important influence on the performance of gears. In order to study the time-varying friction characteristics of tooth surfaces with different topography, the influence of surface topography on the friction coefficient under line contact condition is studied by the twin-disc tribo-tester, and the surface topography characteristic is analyzed by 3D surface topography parameters of ISO 25178. The variation of friction coefficient in the gear meshing process is simulated by using the experimental results. The results show that the influences of load, entrainment speed and sliding-rolling ratio on the friction characteristics of the contact surface are different. The micro structure characteristics of surface topography change the contact surface traction curve, and the nonlinear rise area is greatly affected. Due to the influence of surface topography, there are differences between the simulation results of experimental data based on twin-disc tribo-tester and the calculation results of EHL numerical model, and the influence of surface topography on the gear friction coefficient curve is different along the contacting line of gears. The research results will provide a theoretical basis for the design of surface topography to improve the tribological properties of gear system.
