Abstract: With the rapid development of science and technology, high-end equipment and products are constantly emerging. However, the high-end performance of these equipment and products mainly depend on the absolute guarantee of a very large number of parts/elements/components/devices (called briefly as high performance parts). In this case, the performance, such as wave-transparent, seal, drag reduction or structural elasticity, is usually taken as the primary manufacturing goal of this type of high performance parts. Such parts not only use difficult-to-cut materials, their surfaces but also present the characteristics such as complex curved shape, ultra-high precision, micro-nano multi-scale compound structure and functional coating. Moreover, the primary performance parameters are coupled with the geometric parameters and physical parameters of these parts. As a result, it is rather difficult to achieve such precision (ultra-precision) requirements by using conventional techniques to machine and manufacture these high performance parts. From the point of view of the requirements and applications of high performance parts, the characteristics and its surface classification as well as corresponding connotations of parts are described. Then their research statuses, key issues and related theoretical foundation of four types of surfaces of high performance parts are discussed in detail. Finally, the feasible routes, breakthrough direction and future development trend are also expounded. It provides an effective reference and guidance for the establishment of high performance oriented machining principle, method and process technologies, and therefore it will be helpful for solving the issue of the precision manufacture of high performance parts.
