Abstract: In order to investigate the effect of discharge energy on the quality of holes produced by electromagnetic punching for AA5182 aluminum alloy sheet, the electromagnetic punching experiments under different discharge energies(3 kJ, 4 kJ, 5 kJ, 6 kJ) are carried out on AA5182 aluminum alloy cold-rolled sheets with a thick of 2.0 mm. The quality evaluation including dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, microstructure and micro hardness is implemented. The results show that the discharge energy has significant effects on the quality of the punched holes. That is, with the increase of discharge energy, the dimensional accuracy, surface finish, microstructure quality and micro hardness of punched holes are improved to a certain extent. Compared with 3 kJ, when the discharge energy is 6 kJ, the dimensional deviation of punched holes is decreased by 74.36% to 91.32%, the surface roughness value is decreased by 33.33% to 45.92%, the microstructure quality (burnish zone height) is increased by 47.56% to 63.39%, and the micro hardness value is increased by 6.74% to 6.98%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the electromagnetic punching quality of AA5182 aluminum alloy sheets is significantly improved with the increase of discharge energy. In addition, this work can provide scientific guidance to some extent for the application of electromagnetic punching technology in automobile industry.
