Abstract: With the help of a special wear machine in which the wear behavior of metal pins versus glass or metal coating glass could be seen directly when they were wearing. The processes of the wear particle formation and growth were studied. The results showed that the final formation of wear particle usually went through the following stages; The incubation period of nuclear wear particle formation characterized by metal plastic flow; the wear particle nucleating stage dominated by a so-called Cellular Substructure Cracking Process; the new born nuclear wear particle growth stage through debris mutual transfer; the plowing growth stage of the wear particles which have achieved their critical size of mutual transfer growth. It was the formation and growth of wear particle that predominated the wear process.
