Abstract: Wheel out-of-roundness(OOR) is a common form of wheel wear in railway vehicles, which has a great impact on the vibration, noise, riding comfort and operation safety of vehicles. The feature of each type of OOR is introduced, and some phenomena of OOR in the railway transportation field around the world are summarized. The formation mechanism of wheel OOR is mainly summarized. According to the different causes of OOR, it can be divided into three categories: 1) OOR resulting from the initial defects of the wheel, 2) OOR resulting from the inherent vibration of the vehicle and track, and 3) OOR resulting from the thermos-elasticinstability by tread braking. The research process of OOR wear simulation is reviewed, and the difficulties and challenges of current OOR simulation are pointed out. Moreover, the countermeasures of OOR are summarized, focusing on the improvement of wheel re-profiling quality and the repair of OOR with brake shoe or wheel tread cleaner. What still needs to be further carried out on the OOR is discussed. A reference is provided for the research of OOR mechanism and the selection and implementation of wheel OOR mitigation measures.
