Abstract: The wear resistance and the microstructure in the worn surfaces of metastable austenitic manganese steels are investigated by means of abrasive wear tests, SEM TIM and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It is found that the exists the highest wear resistance under an abrasive impact energy for a metastable austenitic manganese steel. Two kinds of martensite were strain-induced in the worn surfaces during wearing, one contains no carbon and alloying elements and the other contains carbon and alloying elements. The wear resistance of metastable austenitic manganese steels is optimum if the microstructure in the worn surfaces composed of alloying elements containing austenite as well as carbon and alloying elements free martensite.
