Abstract: According to the present theory of cupola melting, the melting of metal charges begins with the batch on the very top of the coke bed, and then the melting goes on batch by batch in proper order. With the development of production, however, some of its weaknesses have been revealed For example, during the melting of No. 2 wear-resisting cast iron, it was found that if the manganese content of burden iron were 6%, the manganese content of the molten iron would reach9-10% at the beginning of melting. In this case, the present theory fails to explain it. On the basis of experimentations and theoretical analyses this article comes up with a new idea of procedural melting zone. Proceeding from this new idea we can not only explain the question mentioned above, but also stabilize the utilization ratio of molten iron, calculate and reduce the coke split consumption. So this new idea is of proper value to both production practice and theortical reseach.
