Abstract: In high speed steel, stabilization and the isothermal transformation to bainite of the retained austenite which has been conditioned during tempering, will take place after holding below a certain temperature for sometime. In the cooling period, the saturated degree of stabilization, the-incubation period of the isothermal transformation during holding as well as the amount of retained austenite stabilized at room temperature (i. e. the retained – austenite not yet 'transformed to second martensite and bainite due to holding) have been measured. The above data may contribute to the experimental basis of non-deformation tempering of high speed steel tools and serve as reference for selecting the treating process employed in non-deformation tempering.
