Abstract: Currently, since the method to optimize the parameters and variables in design for remanufacturing is an issue, the concept of residual strength is given as the mapping factor in optimization design for remanufacturing. With considering the strength curve in “design, service and remanufacture” phases, and based on failure analysis, the hierarchical structure of residual strength, which consists of strength index level, strength & damage level and design information level, and the mathematics expression of residual strength are put forward. The calculation method of residual strength factor is presented. The requirement of residual strength for remanufacturing is analyzed. Meanwhile, taking residual strength factor as the remanufacturing feasibility index, the design method for remanufacturing, which has three phases “analysis, optimization and verification”, is established. An engine crankshaft is given as an instance to validate the design method, and its initial design scheme is optimized for remanufacturing.
