Abstract: Surface engineering is the important process to possess surface properties, such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance, for components in machinery manufacturing. Altering the traditional ones, surface engineering technologies with near-zero emissions can meet the requirements of green manufacturing and reduce the negative effect on the environment. Surface engineering technologies with less energy and materials to obtain better performance than that of the substrate can recover the dimension of the components and be widely used in equipment remanufacturing. In recent years, adapting green manufacturing and remanufacturing, surface engineering technologies have been rapid development, such as green coating technologies to alter the traditional chrome plating, engineering super-lubricating composite carbon films, anti-friction and self-healing technology with nano additives, brush plating with nano materials, new thermal spray technologies and laser surface hardening technology. The latest research results of above surface engineering technologies are introduced from the fundamental investigation and application background, and their future development is predicted.
