Abstract: In order to study the influence of textured surfaces on the tribological properties of plane contact friction pairs, four specimens are designed and manufactured which have the same surface arithmetic average height, and the area density of microcavity are 7%,14%,21% and 28% respectively. A series of frictional experiments for oil lubrication and grease lubrication with operating conditions of different load, velocity and different material are conducted on a HDM20 end-face contact tribo-tester. The effect of surface topography on frictional property is investigated. The 3D surfaces of the specimens are scanned by Talysurf CCI Lite Non-contact 3D optical profiler and characterized through volume parameter in ISO25178 and connectivity parameter. The correlation between characterization parameters and friction coefficient is given. The results show that the influence of micro-structure characteristics of surface topography on friction under oil lubrication is more remarkable than that under grease lubrication. The change of the friction coefficient of textured surfaces is complex under the condition of steel -copper friction pair, but smooth and steady under the condition of steel-steel friction pair. The optimal micro-structure characteristics of surface topography are different under different conditions. It is beneficial for the tribological design of micro-structure characteristics of surface topography to characterize the surface topography through the combination of connectivity parameter and volume parameter.
