Abstract: A study was made of the behaviour of retained compression stress to effect on contact stress and fatigue strength of gears with IBM-PC microcomputer by means of the contact fatigue test, measurement of retained stress and hardness. The results show that the retained compression stress can appreciably decrease stretching stress on the superficial surface and the greatest tangential stress (τmax) in the depth of the contact zone. So it takes important part in improving of superficial point corrosion and wearing and deep pealing of gear. But it increases theτmax beneath the surface. In this condition the fallguo process will be determined by the ratioτmax/ⅡV.
