Study on Coil-only Electromagnetic Ultrasonic Testing Method for High-Temperature Aluminum Alloy

Abstract: In response to the problem of a reduction in magnetic induction intensity when a traditional permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is used in high-temperature detection, the EMAT probes with water-cooled devices are bulky and unable to detect in narrow areas, and magnets easily adsorbing ferromagnetic particles, resulting in a decrease in conversion efficiency, A coil-only EMAT technique, its detection circuit and modeling method are proposed. Taking the coil-only spiral coil EMAT as an example, the coil-only EMAT detection circuit was constructed, and a field-circuit coupled finite element model analysis was conducted on the high-temperature detection process. The influence of temperature on circuit characteristics, excitation efficiency, ultrasonic propagation characteristics, and reception efficiency of the coil-only EMAT was studied. The results show that the factors that affect the amplitude of high-temperature detection echoes are ranked in order of contribution ratio:medium attenuation, excitation efficiency, reception efficiency, diffusion attenuation, and unit-force-excited ultrasonic displacement amplitude. The developed coil only EMAT detection system can achieve continuous detection of 450 ℃ high-temperature aluminum alloy samples, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the secondary bottom wave is not less than 16.86 dB.
