Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al/Ti Dissimilar Metal Resistance Spot Welded Joint with FeCuNiTiAl High Entropy Alloy Interlayer

Abstract

Abstract: The TC4 titanium alloy plate with pre-laser cladding FeCuNiTiAl high-entropy alloy(HEA) and 6061aluminum alloy plate were lapped by resistance spot welding. The effects of welding current and welding time on the interface microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints were investigated. The results show that the FeCuNiTiAl high-entropy alloy used in the experiment has good wettability on the surface of TC4 titanium alloy plate, and no Ti-Al intermetallic compound is produced at the interface of the joint after welding. With the increase of welding current and welding time, the nugget diameter increases, but the tensile shear load of the joint increases first and then decreases due to the influence of the thinning amount of the aluminum plate. When the welding current is 3.0 kA and the welding time is 1.0 s, the tensile shear load of the joint reaches a peak value of 4.1 kN. Compared with the Ti/Al joint, the tensile shear performance of the joint with FeCuNiTiAl HEA is improved by 19.07%.The fracture modes of the welded joint include three types: shear tearing fracture at the aluminum/HEA interface, “button” type fracture around the weld joint and fracture along the edge of the weld joint along the base metal. Most of the joints are fractured on the side of the aluminum base metal, indicating that the spot welding lap joint of 6061 aluminum alloy and TC4 titanium alloy with FeCuNiTiAl HEA as the intermediate layer has good welding quality.
