Abstract: In response to the frequent failure of disc cutters in tunnel construction under high ground stress and complex rock formations such as high hardness and strong abrasion, the abrasive slurry jet with stronger cutting ability than pure water jet was introduced into the TBM cutter head based on the load and wear reduction characteristics of rock breaking technology with mechanical cutter assisted by high-pressure water jet. The layout scheme of jet nozzles on the cutter head was reasonably designed based on the rock breaking load characteristics of pre-slit combined disc cutter, and the indoor cutting tests of water jet-cutter head on concrete rock specimen were conducted in combination with existing experimental conditions to explore the influence of rock specimen compressive strength, jet pressure, cutter head rotation and advancing speed on the cutting performance of the cutter head, as well as the correlation between various factors. The results indicate that the increase in rock specimen compressive strength, cutter head rotation and advancing speed will push up the torque and propulsion resistance levels of the cutter head. The presence of abrasive slurry jet helps to improve the load state of the cutter head and weaken the influence level of related factors, and the higher the jet pressure, the more significant the effect. However, the introduction of abrasive slurry jet not only increases the tunnelling speed of the cutter head, but also drags down the economy of construction due to the higher rock breaking specific energy of high-pressure water jet compared to mechanical tools. The primary and secondary order of the influence of various factors on the torque of the cutterhead is rock specimen compressive strength, cutter head rotation speed, cutter head advancing speed, and jet pressure, while what on the propulsion resistance of the cutter head is rock specimen compressive strength, cutter head advancing speed, jet pressure, and cutter head rotation speed.
