Abstract: The rock breaking force of disc cutters is the theoretical foundation of TBM design and is also a hot and challenging topic in the field. Generally, the rock breaking force of disc cutters is studied through experiments of linear rolling and crushing of rocks or software simulations, focusing on the vertical and rolling forces of the disc cutters. Research on the circular rolling and crushing rock force of disc cutters, especially the lateral rock breaking force, indicates that both theoretical and experimental studies need further exploration. Based on this, the research discovers the “plastic-brittle” properties of rocks under the action of TBM disc cutters through indentation tests and linear rolling and crushing rock tests. Theoretical research proves that the rock crushed by circular rolling of TBM disc cutters has plane strain characteristics. Accordingly, a theoretical model for the circular rolling and crushing rock force of TBM disc cutters is established. Experimental research finds that the average relative error between the theoretical and experimental values of the vertical force of the TBM disc cutter circular rolling and crushing rock force theory is 5.596%, the average relative error between the theoretical and experimental values of the rolling force is -4.696%, and the average relative error between the theoretical and experimental values of the lateral force is 5.3%. The experimental results verify the correctness of the theoretical research.
