Abstract: There was little report about more than 100 mm aluminum alloy friction stir welding. The 110 mm 5083 aluminum alloys thick plates were friction stir butt welded by both sides with two welding parameters. Welded specimen were subjected to tensile testing and observed by metallographic and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that welds with no defects were superior in quality; Tensile strength of joints were up to 98% of parent metal? yield strength account for 90%, elongation account for 75.5% and 82.4%. The tensile strength was shown the “V” trend along thickness direction; Precipitated phase with enrichment of Mg element were observed on cross section of weld joints but no Interface curve; Fracture mechanism transform from ductile fracture to brittle fracture along direction of welding depth. Mechanical properties for 110 mm aluminum alloy friction stir welding joint along thickness direction were studied.
