Abstract: Rolling element bearing skid damage frequently occurs in high-speed bearings when the load on the bearing is light. The squeeze film damper(SFD) is often adopted in the high-speed rotor system supported by rolling bearing to reduce the vibration and noise when rotor passing through critical speed. The effect of SFD on the bearing skid should be studied in order to ensure system reliability. The mechanism of SFD reducing vibration of machine is usually through whirling movement of its inner ring and bearing in its structure, then the kinematical and dynamical models of the whirling roller are developed based on the assumption of the orbit of bearing whirl, and the skidding damage of rolling bearing under various factors is investigated, and the skidding failure mechanism under various factors such as radial load, frequency and radius of whirling motion is investigated. The results show that adverse effects on skidding and fatigue life of bearing could be brought by whirling motion of bearing in SFD, and the existence of whirl causes movement instability and minimum oil film thickness oscillating with time. The deleterious effects could be reduced by increasing the radial load and reducing the frequency and radius of whirling motion moderately.
