Abstract: In order to get aluminum-iron composite wire through casting and to reduce the cost of ACSR/AC(aluminum conductor aluminum clad steel reinforced), the process of aluminum-iron compound casting is proposed. In this experiment, the solid iron wire is dipped into liquid aluminum for 300 s and then liquid aluminum of 800 ℃ is cast around it through the casting mould specially designed casting mold. A cohesion area 10~30 µm composed by aluminum and iron is achieved after this process in which the aluminum content can be up to 67.75 percent. Meanwhile, the microhardness is over HV250. The cohesion area is mainly composed of Fe2Al5 and FeAl according to thermodynamic data. In contrast, without the hot dipping treatment, a 10 µm wide gap between the two metals is observed by means of scanning electron microscope and verified by results of energy spectrum analysis and microhardness test. The results suggest that a metallurgical interface is achieved between aluminum and iron via casting, which contribute to the investigation of producing aluminum-iron composite wire by casting.
