Abstract: Referring to the symbiotic theory of organisms, functional relations are systematically classified at a cognitive level as to supply necessary action conditions, to remove harmful side effects and to prevent or smooth away adverse impacts from environment. These relations are employed to guide designers to further develop the total functional structure of a desired product for creative design after the feasible principle solution to its purpose function is retrieved from the knowledge base. Then a symbiotic theory based process model for computer aided conceptual design is proposed, comprising the sub-processes of both functional structure design and principle conceptual design. According to the action conditions, side effects and environmental impacts of the retrieved principle solution candidate, this design model can dynamically and flexibly yield a total functional structure feasible for the desired product. An illustrative design case demonstrates that the proposed model is prone to successful development of creative products and consistent with the design cognitive model.
