Abstract: Two basic forms of the product structure’s variant are proposed：horizontal and vertical layout. Based on the ar-rangement relations of an assembly model, a new approach for assembly modeling is put forward by taking top basic skeleton as bridge in the top-down design and Pro/E as a technical support, and shows the process of variant design by an example.
