Abstract: Up to now the production systems are most popular in welding expert systems (ES), but many drawbacks of single production system affect their application. A hybrid architecture combining case-based reasoning (CBR) and rule-based reasoning (RBR) is proposed and used in a spot welding processes design ES. The results show that combining CBR and RBR can overcome effectively the drawbacks of single RBR, such as low inference efficiency, knowledge acquirement bottleneck, etc. So the properties of ES are enhanced. The architecture, design philosophy, and inference mechanism are introduced in detail.
