Abstract: In active magnetic bearing (AMB) system, the most important mechatronical structure parameters are the air gap between rotator and stator and the bias flux density in stator, which affect the basic characteristic of stiffness and force capacity. The stiffness and the linear range of the force capacity decide the basic bearing performance. By analyzing the relationship between structure parameters and bearing performance based on the Maxwell’s equation, it has been found the there exists a theoretic boundary between the linearity and the nonlinearity of the electromagnet force relative to the variety of displacement, and there are also a optimal linearity range and optimal stiffness in each AMB system controlled by the linear system.
