MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SILICON CARBIDE WHISKER REINFORCED Al2O3 and Al2O3+ZrO2 CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITES

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of SiCw contents on the mechanical properties of hot-pressed Al203+SiCw and Al203+20vol% ZrO2-2mo1% Y2O3+SiCw ceramic matrix composites (AS and AZS composites). The results show that with increasing SiCw content (from 0 to 30vol%) in composites, the flexural strength (σf), fracture toughness (Kic) of AS composites and the Kic of AZS composites are continuely increased, but theσf of AZS composites is increased only up to 20vol% SiCw, increasing SiCw content further (up to 30vol%), it is decreased. It is found that that the mechanical properties of AS composites are improved further by incorporating 20vol% ZrO2-2mol% Y203. Particles theσf, Kic of AZS composites are higher than those of AS composites at the same SiCw content. The effects of SiC whisker toughening and ZrO2 phase transformation toughening on the Kic of Al203 ceramics are substantially synergic, but the strengthening effect of SiCw on the Al203 ceramics is greater than that of Al203+20vo1%Zr02-2mol% Y203 ceranics.
