Abstract: An average Reynolds equation applicable to the compound randam surfaces including both roughness and waviness is derived in present paper. The critical load capacity Wcr at the moment when the minimum norminal film thickness hmin = CRp is regarded as the criterion to evaluate the film formation ability of norminally flat friction pairs. The imp ortante influnce of height features of rough surfaces on the critical load capcity is demonstrated,. That is WC,. Will increase rapidly as the value of σ and Rp/ σ is reducing. Besides, the critical load capacity of various slider bearing with different surface topography i3 calculated and measured, the experiment and calculation results are in good consistency. The significant effects of the height features on film formation is com-fir-med by the experiment. The calculation indicates that good lubrication behaviour of wide scraped surfaces mainly results from that they have a smaller of σ and Rp/ σ, and a Waviness with larger wayelengh and larger proportion.
