Abstract: Under tangential fretting and imitating human physiological solution conditions, the fretting behaviors of axial cortical bone from fresh human femur are investigated by sliding against pure titanium ball counterpart. The friction logs and friction coefficients of cortical bone are calculated. The fretted surfaces of the cortical bone are analyzed by means of laser confocal scanning microscopy. The results show that the friction logs for cortical bone change with cycles from elastic partial slip, plastoelastic partial slip to gross sliding respectively. And the evolution of friction coefficients in each fretting condition is also compared statistically. The fretting damage in the elastic partial slip is slight. But the abrasive wear and micro-fracture are observed in the plastoelastic partial slip and gross sliding regions. The wear depth increase with cycles and well related to the friction coefficient of cortical bone in each fretting condition. To reduce the fretting damages of bone, it is advisable to control the displacement amplitude at bone-imp- lant interface.
