Abstract: The magnetic levitated grinding spindle (MLGS) can be in high temperature due to less heat dissipation. High temperature may cause thermal expansion which will reduce the reliability of the system because of thermal stress and gap changing of the magnetic bearings and the motor. Experimental measurements combined with finite element analysis are adopted in the research. With consideration of heat transfer modes of conduction and radiation, a finite element model for analyzing the thermal state of MLGS is built. Finite element software ANSYS is used to analyze the temperature field of MLGS, then the temperature field distribution of the spindle component is obtained. The HY-2988G. thermal infrared imager is used to measure the temperature field distribution of MLGS. The research shows that raising cooling efficiency can effectively control the temperature rise of MLGS, and the location of temperature monitoring point should be selected in the motor place. Through comparison and analysis of the experimental and theoretical results, it is concluded that the thermal design and structural design of MLGS have important influence on the temperature distribution of system in working, and can provide the theoretical basis for its online temperature monitoring and control.
