Abstract: Influences of filter cutoff frequency on contact mechanism for rough surfaces are investigated by use of expanded dry contact program based on fast Fourier transform(FFT) technology and conjugate gradient method, and contact solution methods based on Greenwood and Williamson(G-W). Results show that the cutoff frequency used in the reprocessing of morphological data of rough surface has a significant effect on the force-approach curve. The G-W model is valid only for contacts between rough surfaces with longer wavelength. Therefore, the effect of filter cutoff frequency on contact mechanism between rough surfaces should be kept in mind in various applications of G-W model.
