Abstract: Grinding was almost as a finishing process working at very low removal rates. In recent years, however, grinding are following a trend toward high efficiency. Heavy grinding, which is represented by steel snag grinding is the most typical high removalrate grinding. Its metal removal rate is near to the running and milling. Snag grinding is used to remove scale and surface defects of steel billets or slabs or slabs, in order to get high quality steel products. Because the billets to be ground are counted by million tons, the amount of grinding work is so large that the wheels used are almost one-third of total number of wheels made every year, so it is important to conduct experimental investigation of Heavy Grinding to theory and practice. In this experimental investigation, a heavy grinding test under high wheel speed (40~80m/s) and heavy load (1000~6000N) was made, using a specially made snag grinding machine and a imported slab grinder. This paper deals with relationship among working parameters (e. g. the wheel speed, the grinding force, the workpiece moving speed ,wheel types, etc) and various factors (e. g. the metal removal rate, the wheel wear, the grinding power, the specific grinding energy ,the grinding temperature, etc). Heavy grinding mechanism was also discussed with test results and observe on grinding chips, grain at wheel's working surface. The investigation shows that the high speed heavy grinding has more economic benefit than the ordinary snag grinding in domestic steel factory now and is a way to develop the snag grinding technology in our country.
