Abstract: A virtual environment based dynamic design steering method is proposed. With virtual reality and computation steering techniques utilized, the structural dynamic design process becomes a close-loop that made up of a classical dynamics design sub-system, a virtual environment and designers. This displays the dynamic design process to designers in good time, and helps designers to track on the dynamic design process and to steer it expediently. After discussing the basic theory, key techniques and system implementation of this method are stud-ied in detail. An example of dynamic design of a submerged rotating-shell is given to demonstrate that structural dynamic design process that can be visualized and steered expediently by means of the presented method.
