Abstract: To improve the dynamic response of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) when it is used as mobile power source, a method to introduce RuO2•nH2O into the PEMFC is proposed, so that the PEMFC is provided with the function of super capacitor. Firstly, hydrous ruthenium dioxide (RuO2•nH2O) is prepared by using sol-gel method. A layer of RuO2•nH2O is adhered on Nafion membrane surface by using czochralski method. This membrane is made into membrane electrode. Test on the cyclic voltammetry of electrode and test on the steady state performance of cell are carried out. The test results prove that the adding of RuO2•nH2O does not influence the activeness of Pt and has no negative effect on the steady state performance of cell. Tests on dynamic response of voltage in different current and multi-potential steps chronoamperomertry show that RuO2•nH2O as capacitive material added into the membrane electrode of PEMFC can buffer great voltage attenuation of cell at instantaneous loading.
