Cutter Location Optimization Algorithm for One-side NC Machining of Globoidal Cams Based on Equidistant Surfaces

Abstract: As for the current multi-axis machining of the globoidal cam profile, the disadvantages of the present one-side machining method are mainly analyzed based on the analysis of various machining methods. With regard to the deviation reduction between the theoretical profile and the practical one, an optimized one-side machining cutter-location calculation algorithm is proposed, its objective is to minimize the deviation between the tool axis trajectory surface and the offset surface of theoretical cam profile. The advantages of double points offset algorithm and three points offset algorithm for flank milling non-developable ruled surface are integrated into this optimization algorithm for toolpaths planning. Comparative analysis of the theoretical errors is conducted by examples among the various one-side machining cutter-location calculation methods, the results show that the improved one-side machining method is correct and effective and cutting errors can be evidently reduced, and which lays a sturdy theoretical foundation for further improving the precision and perfecting the process of one-side machining of the globoidal cam.
