Abstract: The working principle of a flow pattern magnetorheological(MR) damper is introduced. The fluid dynamic analysis is done based on Bingham plastic model and fluid motion differential equation, and then the mathematical model of MR damper is established. The charts of damping-displacement characteristic and damping-velocity characteristic are obtained during the experiment. The model coefficients are identified based on test results, and then the simplified mechanical model is established. Results show that the applied current has direct relation with MR Damper performance but it gives best results when applied current is less than 0.8 A. The difference between damping force experimental values and the calculated value is observed about 100 N, and the difference of 19% is observed. The simplified mechanical model can describe the basic mechanical properties of the MR damper.
