Abstract: The preloading is an important design parameter in hydrostatic mechanical face seals. Considering the multi-body contact relationship between the sealing components and the influence of the O-ring secondary seal, a thermal fluid-solid interaction (TFSI) model for hydrostatic mechanical face seal is finally developed. According to the change of contact relationship between the seal ring and the support ring, the regulation mechanism of the preloading on the sealing performance is analyzed. The results show that the preloading of the screw has a significant effect on the sealing performance. The leakage rate increase as the preloading increases, and this change law is affected by the contact status between the seal ring and its support. Moreover, it is found that the stationary ring and the rotating ring play different roles in sealing, because the size and boundary conditions of the supporting rings are different.
