Abstract: A transient model of tilting-pad thrust bearing with equalizing beam structure during start-up and shut-down is established. In this model, interface slippage, squeezed and the wear of the pivot are considered in this transient model. Under the same operation conditions and geometrical dimensions of thrust pad, the starting characteristics of tilting-pad thrust with and without equalizing beam structure are studied. Numerical analysis results show that equalized beam structure could reduce opening speed of the tilting pad thrust bearing. As the installation error increase with the opening speed increase, therefore, equalizing beam structure reduce the installation requirements of tilting-pad thrust bearing. A scaled test rig of tilting-pad thrust bearing with equalizing beam structure or without equalizing beam structure is designed. The experimental results show that, compared with the thrust bearing with equalizing beam, the maximum load difference of each pad are more than 90% in tilting-pad thrust bearing without equalizing beam structure, the difference value of the tilting-pad thrust bearing with equalizing beam structure is less than 4.6%. Equalizing beam structure could reduce the opening speed and increase the tolerance of installation error. The experimental results are consistent with the numerical results.
